Default What does the Hit Counter count?

I just recently got my new Cart up and running. I saw that the counter had a lot more hits than I thought it should have. So I reset it this morning. My Website which links to Zencart up to this time of day has only had 50 some hits so far. But my Zencart counter has had 1243. I reset the counter to 1000 so it's telling me I've had 243 hits so far today. So my question is; what is the counter actually counting? Apparently not unique hits... right? If so, the lack of sales to this point is very disappointing.

    Thanks in advance.

I just searched the FAQs for "counter" and got this: http://www.zen-cart.com/content.php?...rded-days-mean

Thanks, that is what I was looking for. So it's not just unique, since it counts page hits and the same person coming back later. Hey, it's not all bad, at least I have activity. The one's that come back are hopefully fixin to buy!

    Thanks again.

This aea is still a little fuzzy
If the 2 numbers in the hit counter marked UNIQUES - VIEWS. Let's assume they are 25 -- 45
Does the word views equal pages?
Does that mean I had 25 unique visitor and those 25 unique visitor looked at 20 (views)pages or
Does it mean I had 25 unique visitors that looked at 45 (views) pages?

Whatever the answer is , none of the numbers come close to the total of "Best Viewed Products" from the REPORTS > PRODUCTS VIEWED report.
Should the total of "Best Viewed Products" have any relationship to any of the other other figures?

    Using version 1.3.9h
What plugins/addons have you installed? When?
    I installed via FTP
    Using MySQL: 5.5.11
I've posted a snapshot of the problem: http://www.peppermaster.com/images/hitcounter.jpg

My question is also about the hit counter and oddly uber excessive hits...

If you look at the hit counter, on Feb 3, I seem to have had over 2000 visitors.

Either I'm REALLY being throttled by google and they released the throttle on that day, or this is very out of place given the number of hits I seem to enjoy every other day.

Can anyone shed some light on this, please?

Interesting. Usually I see around up to 100 visitors per day but today (according to the hit counter) I had around 3,000 visitors who each looked at circa one page.
The report of "products viewed" confirms this; I assume I was hit by some sort of automated software but I do not see any reports in zencart that would help me to dig deeper?
I do not suppose this matters significantly but any views/comments are welcome
