Due to circumstances I had to cancel my hosting and domain name a few months ago but did a part and full backup of my web site through cpanel.

I now want to set up the site on a spare pc at home and am thinking off downloading xampp for this.
When I go to download a new zen cart can I use the latest version or should I use 1.3.9 that I was using before.

How can I retrieve the data in my backups to the local set up.

Start with 1.3.9 and get it functioning before upgrading

Hopefully you also took a database backup

I have a sql.gz file and two backup.tar files.

Use phpmyadmin after creating your new database and import the sql.gz file

Have installed xampp and new copy of 1.3.9. on p.c. Will install template I was using, should I install all the add ons first before trying to install sql?

You should follow the basic install/upgrade instructions included in the docs directory of the Zen Cart download files. Slow and steady is the answer. Trying to accomplish two or three things at once is foolhardy. Since you are doing a local test (not recommended at all for live sites)**Get the new cart working. (If you are sure you have mods that are NOT compatible with 1.5.1, then load 1.3.9h)**Update the database and products.**Make sure all is working.**Create a custom template.**Make sure all is working.**Load the most important mod.**Make sure all is working.**Repeat the two lines above as necessary.******************Sorry for the hodge-podge formatting the forum is messing with me.

I have installed 1.3.9h as this was the one on my live site and all working fine. Should I update the database from my copy of the original site before installing a copy of the template that I was using and then install the other mods that I used to use.
Sorry if I am repeating your advise but want to get it right.
