Add subcategories under one category with products? (move products)

Hello,

I have an existing category that has some products in it already. However, I need to reorganize them: instead of putting all products under one category, now I want to create multiple subcategories under it, and move the products into these subcategories.

Is there an easy way to do that? From what I read so far, looks like the only choice is to delete the products under the existing category, so I can create subcategories under it, then add the products back in.

You can create a "holder" category and move the products to it
Add sub-cats to the now empty cat and then move the products from the holder cat to their desired locations

That's how I'm doing it. I could probably have gone into the db and ran a query, but with only a handful of products to move, this seems best.

Running a query would probably bust the database as there are many intertwined tables when it comes to categories and products. What kobra suggested is the safest by far.
