Single product, Color options, but option to buy several of each??

I read the manual, but doesn't seem to address the situation wherein:
the user wants to buy different color options of a single product, like 3 red and 2 blue shirts, that
is 5 of the same item.

can someone please advise how to set up? i set up as checkboxes (rather than radio buttons) but it seems confusing to check off them both but still send a quantity of one ...?!

Using the Zen Cart as-is, the customer would need to purchase 3 red shirts and then also purchase 2 blue shirts -- there's no one-click method in the base code assuming that you have a single product (shirt) defined with color (red, blue) attributes.
