How can designate a Sub-Cat with products be displayed in Main Content area when ..?

Here's what i'm trying to do as per clients directive:

The home page opens with top level categories in the main area (there are no other navs at that point). When a Top Level Cat. image is clicked, i want to show a designated sub category with product images with links.

(I have it set so that the LH column then appears with Cat and Sub Cat links)

Currently what happens is, and i'm not clear on why or what the 'mechanism' is, the main content area shows a single product from one of the sub cats. What determines which product gets put into that area?

How many products do you have in the subcats? By default, when a category has only one product, it will skip directly to the product info page instead of showing a one-item list that has to be clicked through. You can set this behavior in Configuration > Layot Settings > Skip 1-prod Categories.

If this is not what is happening, we need to see the site to be able to advise correctly.

In the Blacklight Category there are 10 subcats. I have populated on 2 of the those subcats = 'BlackLights' and Blacklight Bubbles.

i am struggling right now controlling Left and Right columns so it may look a little messed up,

just thinking, maybe there's a misplaced product, i will review the product list now
