Is there a way to bypass/disengage the inventory mechanism

My client doesn't want to track inventory so while creating products and testing i did not enter a number. after doing a test purchase of a product it immediately became disabled.

how can i avoid this?, thanks

Tell your store not to disable products whose quantity has dropped to/below zero.
Admin->Configuration->Stock
