Category Description in tpl_main_page.php

Strange request I know but can anyone advise how I can call the current category description in the tpl_main_page.php file?

Need it outside of the normal category page divs and to sit below the header and above the left column.

I tried using the code from the category files which looks like its defines in main template vars but I guess that's happily below the code I'm playing with??

You can get it with the zen_get_category_description($category_id, $fn_language_id) ...

just pass the categories_id and language_id for this ...
