Is there the force the customer to make an option selection? before putting into cart

Hey Everyone,
my client wants to 'force' the customer make an option selection on products that have options. this would help in eleminating customer order errors.

Scenario would be the first option would read = Please make a selection.
If they did not make a selection before putting into the cart, an error message would be displayed to the customer.

Is there a way to achieve this with ZenCart?, without adding a plug-in?

In your attribute setup, add an Option Value of "Please Select" for the Option Name you want to force a selection on. Make that value "display only" and make it the default with a Sort Order of 0.

Then when they go to buy it, if they've still got the "please select" selected, they'll be told to make another choice.
