Question about Errors log

If you're a developer and are constantly testing out code, wha'ts the ideal way to view errors in the log?

downloading the latest error log via FTP to my desktop isn't very efficient

is there an app available to view, or can i change the error reporting settings?

I do all my testing & development locally. I cat them to screen for real time monitoring.
