Sort order help needed

I am baffled by the sorting logic in ZC. (1.3.9h)

I'm trying to control the order in which my customers view the products.

On the product page I see a "sort order" box. And in the admin section, I see a couple of different spots where I presumably can control sorting, but nothing seems logical to me.

Can someone point me to a FAQ or tutorial on how I go about this?

What page are you attempting to have sorted and by what criteria??

We'd like to be able to sort at the subcategory level:

And we'd like to be able to have the most recently added products show up first

Thanks -- but I didn't understand how that works. The example given is "2a" I'm guessing it means sort ascending on field 2? But I don't know what field 2 is? Or what the numbers of the other fields are.

The first seven entries one can add a number or a "0" to denote what order they are to be displayed in
So if one wants this to be "product name" enter a "1" and then in Display Product Listing Default Sort Order a "1a"

The first seven entries of what? Do you mean the items on the Product listing page (Display Product Image, Display Product Manufacturing Name, etc.?)
