Default Can I reduce the number of files to a lesser amount?

My website has been making error bugs recently, I figured it had to do with server space, but actually it has to do with number of files which are in the system.

I have purged the admin files and dumped the bug file bin ( I believe that's what it's called).

I called my host and they said it would be a complicated issue to move to a server, so I'd prefer to keep the configuration I have.

    Can anyone suggest anything?

I think maybe deleting old customer orders would be a start, but the number of files, nearly 250,000 is pretty high!

    Thanks,

    Matthew

Orders are not in files, they are records in the database.
Where are the bulk of these 250,000 "files" located? You cleared the /logs/ folder (for v1.5.1)? If there were a lot of files there, there is a problem you need to correct, and it starts by looking at recent myDebug files to see what the error is.

    Do you have 250,000 orders?
    or is that 250,000 "files"
If it is files then depending on which version of zen you have they are probably error files in the /cache/ or /logs/ directory.
See what the errors are, fix them so they don't keep adding more files and then delete these error files.

Otherwise do you have "user tracking" installed? This can make the database large if not trimmed now and then.

    How many products?
    How many images?
    Size of database?

Moving to a new server isn't hard for a seasoned host...........seriously they told you that?

As everyone else has said that is a ton of files!
    Signature not needed

A default install takes up about 25K of disk space and is comprised of only about 10,000 files

You need to answer what the size of your database is and how much disk space you are using

I've talked to my web developer and realized there are a few copies of the site on the server, so that's one issue of why so many files.

There's not much space used total, but too many files

    4,975.00 MB used space

    255,611 of 262,144 used files

So I gather I need to delete the old copies of the site and clean up some of the extra files and also determine if the file build up is caused by another issue as well.

Would there be an negative aspects of deleting old, unused copies of my site?

You still need to find out where the majority of these "files" are
How many products do you have?
Do you have products in the hundreds of thousands?
and as a consequence how many images (files) do you have.
Even with many copies of your website you would be unlikely to have this many files (normally).
