PayPal Standard occasionally does not pass back order to cart

We have a Zen Cart selling virtual products that on occasion the customer's order gets completed and paid for through PayPal standard but the payment notice and order is not passed back to the shopping cart.

if you review the basket it looks like the order is still pending in the customer's shopping cart.

Any help or direction to correct this problem would be appreciated.

Intermittent problems like that are a known issue with PayPal Standard. Some servers won't work properly with it. Remove it and install the much more reliable Paypal Express Checkout.
