How to display new products (List Version) on main page from date added?

I like the old school horizontal listing type one at a time. When you press the link new listings in the left column it gives you my desired view with accurate listing showing from date added. When you click on the new listings under the featured gallery. It is more random. Is there a way to get the horizontal listings to show up on the main page when loaded?

If theres no easy way to do this, I suppose I can settle with the new or featured listings showing on the main page. The only problem though. They don't automatically expand. So you come to the site and theres a button that says new listings or featured listings, but I have to click the button for them to expand! Hmmm.
