Default Make items in cart disappear from catalog

    Hello all,

Okay, so I've seen other discussions in this area, but I have read those threads and not found any fixes that work. I'm a new zen cart user and I'm trying to get this set up for me shop selling one of a kind items. Which means each item should disappear from the catalog when added to the cart. I don't want it to as sold out, I would prefer it to simply disappear. Site is below, I have a few test items in the jackets/crested category. I hope to eventually set it so that when you go to jackets it displays all of the items in the subcategories. I've seen some threads about that, but I haven't had time to try to apply them. Still not sure why that setting for showing subcategories didn't become a setting in the admin panel.

Here is a link to my site:

It's been an uphill battle in my mind getting this set up. I feel that I'm getting close, but every time I open a new module I find a new error that needs to be fixed or tweaked. This problem with items not disappearing happens in the classic and my custom template. Any help is appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Christopher

What's your setting in Admin - Stock - Products status in Catalog when out of stock should be set to ? Remember that Zencart only subtracts stock when a product goes through the checkout process, so you can't just set the product quantity to 0 to simulate out-of-stock.

Here are my stock settings in configuration:

    Check stock level true
    Subtract stock true
    Allow Checkout false
Mark product out of stock 0
    Stock Re-order level 1
Products status in Catalog when out of stock should be set to 0
Show Sold Out Image in place of Add to Cart 1
    Product Quantity Decimals 0
Show Shopping Cart - Delete Checkboxes or Delete Button 3
Show Shopping Cart - Update Cart Button Location 2
Show New Products on empty Shopping Cart Page 1
Show Featured Products on empty Shopping Cart Page 0
Show Special Products on empty Shopping Cart Page 0
Show Upcoming Products on empty Shopping Cart Page 0
Show Notice of Combining Shopping Cart on Login 1

I was trying to test this by adding the item to the shopping cart, but when I hit continue shopping it took me back to the same product and allowed me to add the item again. It then generated an error, but it didn't let me change the quantity in the shopping cart, which also seems to be a glitch. I did apply the add on for row display of items instead of a single column, but the error seems to be in the classic and custom template.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Christopher

Again, the stock is only decremented when the product goes through the entire checkout process. Try creating a product with a very low price and actually 'buy' it by checking out. When you go back to the store, that product should be not listed.

Thank you for the reply. Since my site isn't "live" I can't go through the entire purchase process, unless I can make an item free. I guess then it might go through the entire checkout Still, this causes a problem since a person can add two of the same item when shopping even though there is only one. There also appears to be no way to change the quantity back to 1 after it has been increased to 2. Are you saying that there no way to remove an item from the catalog while it is in the shopping cart of another user? This is done in other store software? Is there a mod to add this?

Okay, so I created a free item and went through the entire process and indeed it disappeared. I'm just concerned about the ability to add multiple products even though the quantity is listed as only 1 in the system. It also makes me wonder about the chance of two people adding the item to their carts and ordering them at the same time. SHouldn't it be help while it is in one persons cart?

If there is only one in stock and you don't want folks trying to buy more than one, then configure your product so that the quantity field doesn't display.. you can also specifiy maximum purchase quantity to be REALLY sure that one one per customer is slected.. (you should see this in the product setup.. it's pretty self explanatory)

As for two people adding the same product at the same time, he who completes the checkout first wins.. the other person will be notified that the product is out of stock when they attemp to complete their checkout..

So I come to your shop and add to cart "ALL" your one of a kind items and then I just sit there being a pain in the a**.
All these items are now unavailable to "real" buyers.
How do you deal with someone like me?
You are assuming that browsers who "add to cart" have some intention of actually buying the items. I can tell you that browsers add to cart for lots of other reasons.
And by doing so you want to prevent real customers from purchasing???

This is a question that has been discussed many times.
You want to actually sell your one of a kind items, don't you?
Then allow everyone to add them to your cart.
and post a big message that "these are one of a kind items"
and just because it is in their cart its NOT theirs...
until they complete the checkout and pay for the item
    .

So first to checkout gets the item.
All others who have it in their cart will find it magically disappears.

    Item sold, you're happy
Customer who checked out first got it, they're happy
The rest... well they learned a lesson to check out faster.

    imo.

Yes, this ability to subtract things from the catalog can be an issue, but the cart expires in relative short order unless you sit there and keep actively updating it. Certainly this is the way many shopping cart programs work on different websites, gilt.com comes to mind. So, the risk of this shouldn't be that severe.

Still this doesn't address the other issue that even when setting an item to having only one in stock and a max of one (as suggested in the other post) you can add the item multiple times to the cart. Granted you get an error when you do this, but then you can only correct the issue by deleting that item completely from your cart and starting over. Some of this may be removed if there is a way to change the continue shopping button to take you back to the top of the catalog as opposed to back to the same item that you just added.

I didn't see a fix to any of these issues off hand, which is why I started the thread. IF anyone could point to a fix it would be greatly appreciated!

If you are referring to TWO people adding the same item to their cart at the same time, then yes you are right.. the settings I suggested won't prevent that scenario.. It will prevent any single shopper from adding more than one of that product to the cart.. However as several of us have explained the one who completes their checkout first will cause the product to no longer be displayed in the store, and anyone who might have had the same item in their cart at the same time will get an on-screen message informing them that the item is no longer available.

Now this is how it works, and if you want it to work differently you will need a fair bit of custom coding to make it work the way you want (remove product from inventory upon adding an item to the cart). If no one volunteers to provide this, your option is to hire a developer to create it for you or use one of the other software packages you say already provide this functionality for you..

So now after "removing" the item from stock you will have to keep track of existing carts so that when they "expire" the product will "magically" appear "back in stock" for customers who could have already purchased it if you hadn't prevented them from doing purchasing it earlier.

From their "point of view" they see the item as available
    Then its NOT available.
    Then later its available again???

What about a customer who is "logged in", their cart will be "saved" for the next time they login to the website. Do you still want them to have the item "exclusively", forever?
