Default SSL Problem...please help an ignoramus

    Hi everyone,

I have tried to find a solution to my problem in the forums but I don't seem to be able to crack it with the information I have found - I think I am doing something wrong at the install stage which is then messing up the SSL...but I have never installed Zencart or used SSL before so would appreciate some really basic explanation...I only have html experience and have managed our small family-owned shop website for less than a year.

NOTE: One major mistake I made is that I have foolishly been editing the default images and text on the classic template rather than making my own and using an override...I know now that this is really dumb and have downloaded all my changes so I can re-upload from scratch and do it right next time, however I don't think this is affecting my main issue.

I installed ZC as per the instructions here: http://www.zen-cart.com/content.php?...stall-zen-cart but was a bit unsure of this section - I am on 1and1 shared server with shared SSL, setup to a subdomain (and yes, if I can get it working on this and I will move to a better host when funds allow!):

Main site http://www.peepultree.co.uk - want to keep this for information pages once the new shop works, have the shop on a subdomain as this root folder is already too busy.
Shop subdomain http://www.shop.peepultree.co.uk - this points to the shop_root folder where ZC is installed

•The physical path to your new Zen CartŪ directory
    Example: /home/myusername/public_html/catalog

This I know - /kunden/homepages/0/dbxxxxxxx/htdocs/shop_root (removed numbers in case that is a security risk?)

•The Virtual HTTP Path (the URL to your domain and directory for your shop)
    Example: http://www.mydomain.com/catalog

This I am pretty certain is right - http://www.shop.peepultree.co.uk

•The Virtual HTTPS Server (the secure URL to your domain)
    Example: https://www.mydomain.com
Note: if you have a shared certificate on a virtual server this may look like:
    https://mydomain.secureservername.net/
    - or - https://secure.sharedservername.net/~username

This is where I think I messed up - I put https://sslrelay.com/shop.peepultree.co.uk which is what 1and1 give me as the SSL proxy server URL

•The Virtual HTTPS Path (the secure URL to your domain and directory for your shop)
    Example: https://www.mydomain.com/catalog
    - or - https://secure.sharedservername.net/~username/catalog

    Also messed this up? https://sslrelay.com/shop.peepultree.co.uk

Now with those settings I installed (saying do not enable SSL yet) and the shop worked in http, both front and back end. I messed around with the text and graphics a little following the guides on here (logo, sales text etc) except editing the live files rather than making a template as mentioned abo. So I edited the two configure.php files and changed 'ENABLE_SSL_CATALOG', to 'true' and I checked the address https://sslrelay.com/shop.peepultree.co.uk and it loaded the page. However, if you click on a link it takes you straight back to http again...

When I try to log in to the admin panel it now appears (there was a trailing slash missing after xxADMIN in the configure.php but I worked that out) but it will not accept my username and password...

Can anyone tell me what dumb mistake I am making so I can start afresh and get this working?

If I have removed details you need, or you need more info please ask!

    Thanks in advance

Unless I missed something, your settings appear to be correct.

Perhaps the 'mistake' is that you've only edited one of the two configure.php files?
or, perhaps these files are/were still only 'read' access, and your configuration settings didn't get written back to the files?

    Cheers

    Thanks for the reply Rod,

I have double and triple-checked and I have both configure.php files at 777 before replacing them - opened them and checked and they are changing on the server when I change to SSL enabled or back again (after not being able to log in to the admin panel).

I think I am going to admit my mistake was continuing with 1and1 when I took over the site!

I have tried replacing the php-generated paths with the address as in a post found on this forum http://www.zen-cart.com/showthread.p...ighlight=1and1 but with no joy...

At each stage I am checking the files have changed on the server by using FileZilla's view/edit and notepad++.

I think tomorrow I will be transferring to a different hosting provider, swiftinter.net have ZC installed through fantastico/softaculous and I would hope that this would configure correctly :) They also seem to have customer support who are quick to answer queries, are based here in the UK and have a great offer on ZC hosting packages at the moment - has anyone any experience of them?

    Cheers,

    Chris

That could be one of your mistakes. I'm not convinced it has much to do with your current problem though.

Perhaps if you post a copy of the relevant portions of your configure files I/we will be able to see what you have missed.

    That could compound the problem.

You think wrong. These things will never perform a correct installation. They'll install things with their own idiosyncrasies and any attempts to upgrade will generally cause things to fall over in a bad way.

Avoid the 3rd party installers at all costs.

    Cheers
