Using Ajeh's guidance in

I have successfully managed to display subcategory descriptions by adding $categories->fields['categories_description'] to category_row.php (did not touch main_template_vars.php of the /pages/index)

The trouble is any deeper than one layer of sub categories and the descriptions do not show, such as

Store
Cat1 + description
Cat2 + description
Cat3 + description

Click on Cat3 to list further sub cats like

Cat3
Cat3a + description
Cat3b + description
Cat3c + description

click on Cat3c to list further sub cats like

Cat3c
Cat3c_a NO description
Cat3c_b NO description
Cat3c_c NO description

I'm struggling to find a solution for this.

Live site only has one level of categories, the sub cats are on dev server
