    Default Seriously Need some Guidance...

    Hello All,

    I hear that you are the "ROCK STARS" here. So thought I would reach out to the all of you.

    I am LOST in the World of ZEN cart.

    I inherited this website from another who set up the whole Shopping cart. Now I need to make updates and add things, and have NO Idea how to do that.

    Looking for the chance that someone might be willing an able to give some one on one instruction.

    Happy to pay for your time, and was hoping to do something with Team Viewer or comparable.

    Need to get this implemented by Friday of this week, as we have a few things, that need to happen before Thanksgiving.

    Probably would be better to post about some of the updates and 'things' you need to add so we can get an idea of what you need done. We may be able to help out here in the forum for free.

    As part of that guidance, would be helpful to follow the guidelines that are displayed if you are in the Zen Cart 2013 view. Eventually (possibly sooner rather than later) we will need to know the site address. Short and simple, recommendation is to provide it with spaces between the periods, so www mysite com would be acceptable...

    Assuming, and based on the above, that some basics needed are to have a good FTP program, there are typically two recommended, I happen to use FileZilla (which is one of the two, I can't remember the other one.) (Good program because the standard ftp from the desktop may cancel out before one of the many files being transferred is completely transferred and that can lead to a lot of confusion and errors on the website.)

    Once you have that, download/backup the code of your site. You will also want to make and maintain a backup of your database. Backups may be an option available on your host, but download would need to be done with that ftp program above.

    You will also need a good/useful merge program that can do comparisons of text/php code. What you download from the site is predominantly made of text files. What you want to incorporate (assuming adding some new not in the system feature) is a text file. Using this utility will show differences between the two and allow merging. Again there are a few recommended tools. The ZC recommended tools are free as well.

    That said, stevesh asked the question about what updates and 'things' you want, because I may have just described something that is not needed for what you need to accomplish at the moment, but will be needed in the future as you maintain/upgrade/change your site.

    If I don't get back to things in here, best of luck on this endeavor...

    Also, don't know your experience with this website (and I don't recall the default settings); however, you want to make sure that you are "paying" attention to threads that interest you, especially those that you start. Towards the top of the window is a thread tools menu option, from there you can select to subscribe to this thread (meaning the thread on which you are looking/posting.) When you select that you will be asked how you wish to be notified for that thread, there are also some default settings in the Settings option at the top of the screen. To maximize your communication/learning, you will want to follow each thread that you have started at least for this week.

    So thank you everyone for the feedback, basically the need is I have this website that you need some new items added to it.

    The website is WWW. Soons Orchard .com

    There you can see it's just a simple shopping cart and I just need to add some other items but when I go to the admin page it seems there's a whole Caveat of things that have to be addressed I just wanted to be simple.

    If by 'add some other items' you mean additional products, that's done in Admin - Catalog, and is a pretty straightforward process.

    While I inherently want to write about (provide help) about al lthe things related to what's in the admin panel, I think we as a group will help to get you where you need to go for this "project".

    To add to what stevesh has commented, in your tasking is there anything special about the product(s) you are adding? (Similar to the gala apples gift pack, item 6 of 11? where it has options (attributes) of single, double, or triple?)

    If so or something similar you may need another menu option in the admin - catalog/products area...

    Basically that menu drop down is where you are going to be spending time over the next couple of days if you are only adding products, changing prices, setting up for a sale, etc...

    A word of note, if you do not yet have the words typed and ready to copy and paste, you should do something to prevent losing your data if it takes 15 minutes or longer to enter a product into your database. One suggestion made by another experienced zenner is to type out and format everything you want to be in the product description inside some other offline document. Then when that looks the way you want it to look, to copy and paste it into the new product in ZC, and fill in the remaining data associated with it. That way after all the hard work and you press the preview button, you don't get a "sorry timed out" message.
