how to track the link a buyer came from

I am going to provide a link to my site to a new partner. I need to track sales that originated from this partner. Any ideas what I should be digging into to solve this? Any modules available for this? I was thinking of just adding on a command line variable (index.php?partnerid=1), capturing it and somehow making it associated with the sale. I did look around, but not real certain what to use as a good search phrase - so far nothing like I am thinking. I am certain there must be a solution for this already in play.
