    help question Database question

I run a copy of my site locally so I can test plugins and templates changes before making them live. What I was wondering was, could I add new products to this local install, then somehow overwrite the database online to reflect these changes? I'm pretty sure I can do this because I run the same database as the one online, I've forgotten how I did it LOL So if I can, could someone walk me through it?

It's so much easier (and quicker) to do everything locally but I need all the urls to be exact as I have a lot of products that link to one another.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

You could simply install Easy Populate (see the plugins section) on both sites (local and live), export your stuff from your local site and then import it into your live site.

Thanks Frank :) I'll take a look at that.

How's the weather? Are you far enough up to be seeing any of that tropical low?

Nope, just a few showers (Caloundra - Sunshine Coast) - - not enough...

Look for Easy Populate 4.0, that should work on your 1.5.2 install

Have a nice weekend / Frank

    Found it, thanks :)

And yeah, they're saying it's the most widespread drought in QLD on record. Not good.

The only thing regarding something like easy populate and the original post is the discussion of having the cross product links exact. If no one is modifying the online store between the times that the local store is modified (regarding products) then it would work, but and depending on how the product(s) are referenced, might not map one-for-one by product id. If product_id is a factor.

All that said, if what is done to the local store is done to the live (create/delete/etc) then it will work and maintain the links that are of concern nearly regardless of the format of the link.

    What I do...
For single new products I just get the descriptions and metastuff right locally then copy and paste to the real shop. There is no time saved any other way.

For multiple products I build a comprehensive spreadsheet with all product fields then import that repeatedly to the local shop with Apsona, fine-tuning it until it is perfect with category links and all, before doing the final import to the real shop.

My 'live' store is not actually live, so I'm only making changes to it once I've tested them on my local install.

And technically there is time saving. A local page will load almost instantly, whereas an online web page can take up to a minute depending upon internet connection, and here in Australia our internet speeds are not that great. Plus I also have to do a bit of back and forth-ing getting the Facebook links dedicated to each individual product, so I have to add the product in the admin, then load the product page on the store to get the url, then edit the product in the admin to add the url - so I need quite a few page loads to do one single product, and I'm about to add about 100 extra products.
I have all my product info pages written out beforehand ... I'm very OCD with being prepared. Probably would of make an excellent girl scout LMAO

Thanks for all your help and advise

    Hi Xena,

Looks like EP is your friend. Just make sure you have a backup of your live DB before doing all this.

When uploading a fresh EP file containing your new products, it ignores existing products which have not been changed and only inserts the new stuff.

    Enjoy the weekend!

    Cheers / Frank
