Certain items require "large package status" for USPS, how to figure

Hello all,
I have a simple but not so simple dilemma here...
Everything I sell as of now is working fine with the built in USPS and UPS shipping modules, great...
Now I am adding a few items to my inventory that I make and ship myself, namely brooms which are anywhere up to 60" long.
Now they do not weigh that much, but the length will put them in a different category for USPS.
I'll give an example:

Say at 6 lbs to Washington State from Florida
Configure: Final package 56" x 7" x 7"

Choosing large package option with USPS which is what will be required:
Priority $47.68
Standard $16.08

Now they will not have the "large package" option during checkout so it will only figure:
Priority $23.70
Standard $16.08 (this does not change)

On Priority that will be a $24.00 difference! What would be the best way to figure this out. I can't just add $20 to the item price, so I need to do something else and I'm not sure what.

Under Config/Shipping/Packaging would the "Larger Package added packing percentage:weight" selection be what I alter here? The brooms are different lengths not necessarily different weights.

Anyone have any ideas ?????

I completely didn't think about this....

If someone purchases a broom that is 60" long fine... other small things can fit into the box.
But what if they purchase a book that is wider than the box, basically the broom will have to ship separately (maybe they all should anyways)

So lets assume the brooms need to ship separately from any and all other items purchased (if any).
Maybe that could make figuring this out easier????

Will the plug in "Shipping Boxes Manager" solve this problem?
