Category removed but product remains

We had a category with a few products in it. My client removed the category as he no longer sold the products. But, a customer was able to purchase something contained in it after he deleted it.

I checked the database and the product itself is still there. It shows a master category id that is no longer in the categories table.

When you delete a category, is it supposed to also delete all products in the category, or do you have to do that manually?

I cannot reproduce this issue ...

Was this a clean install of v151 or is this an upgrade?

It was a clean install.
I found the product in the database, and it shows a master_categories_id of 823, but that does not exist in the CATEGORIES table.
I searched the products_to_categories table and see that product is linked to three other categories. Could this make a difference?

Products have 1 master_categories_id ...

When you delete a Category, all Products in that categories_id that matches the master_categories_id on the Product are deleted ...

Do you have any add-ons in your Admin?

I added Easy Populate 4, Super Orders, Edit Orders, Ceon Back in Stock Notifications, Sitemap XML and Image Handler 4.

To add to this question, how was the category deleted? (Interested in knowing what if any impact EP4 maay have had on this situation.)

Also, *after* the Category was deleted, was it noticed right away that these Products were still there? Or, had Easy Populate been used to touch the database before this problem was noticed?
