Most PHP code written in the last 4 years was written for use with PHP 5.2+. This includes Zen Cart 1.3.9x and most of the recently released Zen Cart plugins.

It may be time to request your hosting provider upgrade the version of MySQL and PHP. This should solve the current problem you are experiencing (and remove some additional security concerns with running versions of PHP beyond end-of-life). Please reference the Zen Cart Server Requirements for more details.

Zen Cart 1.3.9b was released in May 2010 (over four years ago). After the web server environment is brought a little more up to date, it may also be a good idea to start planning / preparing for an upgrade to Zen Cart 1.5.x. Zen Cart 1.3.9 is no longer "officially" supported. Zen Cart 1.5.x includes support for newer versions of PHP and MySQL in addition to numerous security and feature enhancements.

Note: One could try using 3rd party libraries such as simplexml44 for the immediate future... But only as a temporary stop gap. Keeping one's web server environment and applications up to date is necessary to avoid potential security risks, vulnerabilities, and financial repercussions.

Where are the Zen Cart Debug Logs? Where are the HTTP 500 / Server Error Logs?

I have to agree with lat9, the php version is an issue and MySQL should also be updated ...

Speak to your hosting provider and see what has to be done ...

I strongly recommend you upgrade to Zen Cart v1.3.9h, at a minimum, and suggest v1.5 or v1.5.1 as the better choice ...

Before having your php and MySQL upgraded, I would get your site to at least v1.3.9h as regardless of which you use, v1.3.9h, v1.5 or v1.5.1 you will be needing to do updates on your site to the files to run properly, so having a better base to start with of v1.3.9h would help in the transition ...

Ok. IT'S WORKING!!! Called hosting company and they were able to adjust/upgrade PHP. Ironically, our site and files are scheduled to be moved to a new server with the upgraded SQL within two weeks. Thanks for helping me work through this in less than 24 hours. I downloaded the latest ZenCart Version and unzipped the files into a folder on my PC. Terrified to start uploading for fear of screwing it up! Thanks again. You all were most helpful!!!

Thanks for the update that things are working for you now ... be sure to keep an eye on your /cache for debug logs, as there should never be any, unless there is a problem or issue that needs to be addressed ...

    Good luck with your site!
