Most PHP code written in the last 4 years was written for use with PHP 5.2+. This includes Zen Cart 1.3.9x and most of the recently released Zen Cart plugins.

It may be time to request your hosting provider upgrade the version of MySQL and PHP. This should solve the current problem you are experiencing (and remove some additional security concerns with running versions of PHP beyond end-of-life). Please reference the Zen Cart Server Requirements for more details.

Zen Cart 1.3.9b was released in May 2010 (over four years ago). After the web server environment is brought a little more up to date, it may also be a good idea to start planning / preparing for an upgrade to Zen Cart 1.5.x. Zen Cart 1.3.9 is no longer "officially" supported. Zen Cart 1.5.x includes support for newer versions of PHP and MySQL in addition to numerous security and feature enhancements.

Note: One could try using 3rd party libraries such as simplexml44 for the immediate future... But only as a temporary stop gap. Keeping one's web server environment and applications up to date is necessary to avoid potential security risks, vulnerabilities, and financial repercussions.
