Do not merge quantities

When a customer adds the same item to cart twice even with the same option values , we do not want the cart to merge it.
The quantity can be updated on the Shopping Cart itself.
Am I missing something, can this be done ? (I did try to google this but no luck)

Why would you want to do this? Why would you force a customer to the shopping_cart page to update a quantity when it's just as easily done via the add-to-cart (or buynow) buttons?

The customer can still update quantity on product info page and shopping cart, it's just that if he adds the same product twice to cart by clicking on the product again, it should not merge.
This is for a custom product hence this requirement.

The description of the problem (in my opinion) is still unclear. If I select a blue towel, and then a select a blue towel, am I not supposed to see that there were 2 blue towels selected? Now, if the problem is that I select a blue towel and then a green towel and the result is 2 towels green and blue, now that could be a problem.

It would be:
If customer adds a blue towel to cart, then again a blue towel to cart and then a green towel to cart, the cart would show 3 items, i.e 1 Blue +1 Blue and +1 Green, instead of the blue quantity 2 , it would not merge the quantities.
I thought this was a zencart default adjustable function of not merging quantities.

I understand the functionality you want, but if we knew the reason why you want to do this, we might be able to suggest a work-around. There's no built-in switch to do that which I'm aware of.
