Default Do you _MED _LRG and use templates?

Greetings all - First post of many, I'm sure. As I'm new to the ZenCart way I want to be sure that I'm doing things the way "they're done," on a normal basis. In the distant future, I hope to customize my installation so it moves from a catalogue appearance to a eCommerce shop, fully slick and pretty.

In the meantime, I've been cutting my teeth on filename requirements, Catalogue Category/Product creation and the like. I see ZenCart will make use, automatically of different image sizes provided the names obey a certain logic - got it. My question is two-fold: Do you (whomever you are, kind stranger) who understands how, actually provide ALL three image sizes: .jpg, _MED.jpg and _LRG.jpg in your shop?

Additionally, when it comes time to explore templates for ZC, will all this image size work behave predictably through CSS hooks or something or will my extra time on this have to be done again do you suppose?

I, and I think many others, have long eschewed this tedious default process and use Image Handler add-on. With this you upload one large image and the code creates the smaller sizes on demand.

Otherwise you have to do as you have described, .

There are those too that use the image handler add-on (if using ZC version 1.5.x then it is IH4) that also use other features of it to show a "different" picture for different sizes. So say for the icon on the main screen want to have an image that is like "NEW" (it's an example of text or a picture to add onto one product, the word(s)/additional image is up to your imagination), then you could import a small image with that additional text for that one product, and IH4 will address any further downsizing and "naming" necessary. (Wiithin reason). There is still the suggestions that filenames should be entirely lower case (including extension) and without spaces...

The documentation associated with it contains just about everything that could be addressed with it, though some pieces of information must either be pulled together or are in different areas of the document. Be sure to read, reread, and rereread at least before posting a question related to it in the forum. More than likely the answer is in the documentation of that module. (Not all modules have had so much written to help, but this is a progrm that has been around for a long time in one version or another.)
