While it is not a "mission critical" issue, it will be helpful if you make sure that images are appropriately named. When you come across an image that has not been named properly, change it.
Later - when you have a few hours to spare, go through all images and correct them.

I too do not get "alt" tags appearing on sub-category images. This too is not critical, and should not have any effect on SEO, but I also strive for good validation and agree that it should be addressed. I will dig into code files to see if I can find out what creates that area.
