Changing the template colors

I've searched the forum for hours, and found several posts which I thought would benefit...however, I've followed the steps and still the color changes I've put in aren't showing up. I'm not code friendly (I know very little of it so I'm trying to learn as I go) and build the storefront on a test run first.

I want to change the colors from green to red...and put in a picture in the background. I was looking for a template that would work but haven't found one that fits my company so I'm making it. Any tips or tricks to help me understand exactly what it is I'm doing wrong?

I went to the css stylesheet and did the following

body {
margin: 0;
font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 62.5%;
color: #F8F4F4;
background-color: #700101;
}

But its still not changing colors...

I'm using 1.5.1.

I would recommend using firefox or chrome and the web developer tools. They will help you to figure out what line of which file needs to be edited. I would also take a look at the w3c schools css tutorials:

Your help is greatly appreciated. I'll have a look at the link you sent and I'll google the web developer tools on Chrome which I use :)
