Default Turn OFF Dropdown menus, but leave products visible in sub-categories

On my website, I added code that displays the size for all shoes on the site (view), with links to the sub category for each size.

Currently the sub categories are linked to the drop-down navigation. Turning OFF the status of these categories also turns off the products within them.

I would like to keep the the products viewable but turn off or disable the drop-down menus. Is this possible?

By 'drop down menus' do you mean the navCatTabs in the header (jewelry - handbags - shoes, etc)? If so, how are you turning them off?

Yes. The navigation dropdown is controlled by active sub-categories. Turning them on or off is activated by the enable or disable button. I can disable the dropdown menu but at the same time I disable the items in those sub-categories. I need the items active but not the menu.

I wouldn't expect that turning the header categories off in Admin - Layout Settings - Categories-Tabs Menu ON/OFF would affect the availability of categories or products unless you've coded it to do so.

My thoughts exactly. I've been going though the php files with no success. Trying to get an idea of what to look for that may assist in finding the right right code to /*comment out*/ .
