want birthday field to show (when registering) but not be mandatory

I've read several threads about the birthday field so my apologies if this has been asked and answered.

I would like the field to display but not be mandatory (optional for the customer.) Some customers balk at birthday info.

The comment in Configuration>Customer Details says:

Display date of birth field during account creation and with account information
NOTE: Set Minimum Value Date of Birth to blank for not required
Set Minimum Value Date of Birth > 0 to require

(But the options are True or False.)

When reading the comment: NOTE: Set Minimum Value Date of Birth to blank for not required can we assume that it could indeed be set to "blank" rather then true or false? Would this give the desired result above? And, if so, would anyone know where we can set this field to "blank"?

If this isn't the way to approach the problem would anyone have some thoughts on how to approach it?

It is confusing, but look at configuration => minimum values => Date of Birth . That is where you can set the length of the field, and also can leave it empty

Set the Minimum Value of Date of Birth in Admin - Configuration - Minimum Values to blank (not 0). I would also reconsider asking for this information at all. I don't think anyone cares about receiving birthday greetings from a ecommerce website, if that's why you're gathering it. Just another email to delete, to me, anyway.

You may be right about asking for birthdays - customer wants it tho. Thank you.
