    Default Upgrading database

I did remove zc_install (1.5.4) as said, but now I realize that I need it for upgrading the database. Is there anything but the zc_install folder (that I might have removed) that I need to include?

Do I first upgrade the db and then "upgrade" (copy/overwrite/...) the code, as the new code requires the new database!?

All you need is the zc_install folder. Run it and follow the instructions for Database Upgrade.

Would it even be possible to upgrade only the db "right now" and then upgrade the code a little bit later - just a bit longer transition period!? It would simplify the transition chaos for me.

Both the installed files and database versions (of Zen Cart) need to match to ensure proper functioning.

I would recommend against just "overwriting files" and instead recommend following the sage advice posted in the FAQs for "rebuilding" on the new version - starting with a copy of the old database and completely clean Zen Cart 1.5.4 files.

It may sound daunting and complicated at first, but in my experience this process (rebuilding the files and upgrading the database) is the fastest and most stable way to perform an upgrade (and allows one to better evaluate necessary plugins and theme changes in the process).

upgrading from 1.5.3 to 1.5.4. When I first logged into to my admin it told me to delete the zc_install folder. Now I get the message Your database appears to need patching to a higher level. See Tools->Server Information to review patch levels. How do I do that? I see posts about upgrading from older versions.

Keith I had the same problem. You will need to upgrade your database from the ZC Installer. You might have to go backwards and add the zc installer to your site but it only take a few minutes.

    Check out store/docs/2.readme_how_to_upgrade.html Step 3

It will look like you are doing a fresh install but just slow down make any corrections needed hit next and scroll to the bottom of the page for the Upgrade, once you hit that bottom it will show you all the upgrades it needs to do , let it do them all. it is very quick.
When you log back into your site it will be in Maintenance mode, just go to your admin >Configuration > Website Maintenance and turn Down for Maintenance: ON/OFF to false.
And of course don't forget to change your admin name again and lock up the permissions on the configuration files.

    I hope that helps!

The database upgrade should not require any corrections and there is no need to change any code or folder name to do a database upgrade.
    The process is simply:
    1. enter yoursite.com/zc_install, click on continue
    2. agree to the terms
    3. scroll to the bottom of the page
    4. click on Database Upgrade
    5. scroll to the bottom
    6. enter the Database Security items
    7. click on Update Database Now

If you have properly installed your site (no auto scripts or file overwrites), Zen Cart will automatically include the proper settings for everything needed to update the database.

Yes, you will need to come out of Down for Maintenance when you are done.

    Won't let me edit

    Anyway..... The instructions before
Ensure that you have uploaded the "/zen_new/zc_install" folder to your server. Using your browser, surf to /zc_install/index.php and choose "Database Upgrade" when prompted. (Don't select "Install", or you will overwrite your database.) (If "Upgrade" is not offered, then the installer was unable to connect to your database to confirm what version its structure is at. Check your configure.php settings.)
should have been done already in an upgrade.
    Granted the instructions

(If "Upgrade" is not offered, then the installer was unable to connect to your database to confirm what version its structure is at. Check your configure.php settings.)
could be better. Hence my list of seven steps.
