    Default Attributes?

    Hi to all,

Firstly, I'd like to apologies for possible misplacement of this topic as I'm not entirely sure It's attribute related but here goes anyway...

I have a product (photographs) that I wish to have the following attributes:

    Photographer
    Style
    Theme
    Size
Colour (yes I'm a Brit and can't spell properly)
    Orientation

I don't necessarily want to show these attributes (apart from size) with the product description, but wish the customer to be able to browse using the aforementioned criteria and and so wondered If this is possible? I'd be looking at having these options as a drop down menu. At the moment I've changed Categories to "Style" and manufacturers to "Photographer" but am not sure how to proceed from here.

If some could be kind enough to point me In the right direction I'd be very appreciative.

    Kind Regards

    James

You could possibly use the "linked products" feature of Zen Cart. You'd have categories named "Photographer", "Style", etc..

Start out an create the product in the category that makes most sense (e.g. Style). Then use the "link product" (the icon that looks like a C inside a bluish circle) and "link" that product to the appropriate photographer, orientation, theme, etc.

That way, the customer can search on the products based on the photographer, for instance, and the built-in Zen Cart functionality will "discover" those linked products in the appropriate category.

    Thanks for your reply lat9.

That definitely seems like a way of doing it. I'd have to find some way of "hidding" the categories I don't want displaying, although I think I've seen a plug in that might do that for me (although not at the stage of adding plug ins just yet !)

Would It be an idea to have a main categories such as colour and then sub cats such as blue, green, etc....?

You're welcome! The idea is as you indicated, use the main categories as your primary 'distinctions' and then sub-categories to add refinements.

Rather than fussing with the hideCategories plugin (which really, really hides selected categories), you can just update your store's stylesheet.css file to not display (i.e. using the display: none; styling) the linked-to categories.
