Downloads remaining goes to 3 from 5 after one click

I'm selling digital products since 2009. Never had this issue. Recently I changed the theme and updated to v1.5.4. Today someone had problems with one of the downloads and received a message about page doesn't exist. I updated the order over and over until I investigated the case. All my downloads are set up to 7 days and 5 attempts. My recent orders have 3 remaining downloads (that means the customers downloaded once). I also experimented with a fake account and after 2 clicks (downloads), the order expires!
Please help.

With theme are you using? Where did you download it from?
What other Addons are on your site?
Please supply a detailed list of ALL the ways in which your site is different from an original fresh install of v1.5.4.

Theme used: Carlisle Fresh from Picaflor Azul
Addons: Zen Lightbox and Ultimate SEO
Nothing special, I did a regular update (re-install the zen cart with DB update and then I added the theme and those 2 addons).

i can't duplicate the problem here, so trying to figure out what's different on your site vs mine.
I asked ajeh about it and she said she can't duplicate it either.

Fact that store is in a subdirectory, possible an issue with an .htaccess file? Have seen the same decrement of downloads by one when a download fails due to possibly incorrect temp folder permissions (777 applied when host only accepts 755) or other follow-on errors occur.

Found it! Thanks. The unusual behavior was caused by the missing /pub directory from my installation. It is something that I deliberated removed after install (don't ask me why :)). Now it seems to be ok. Thanks again.

To not walk away with a potential issue remaining, did the restoration of the directory include the files provided from a default install?

initially I restored the old directory from an old backup, then I compared the htaccess files with the one from the new zen v1.4.5 installation and I replaced it to the directory. Now the permissions for the index and htaccess are 0644. Am I missing something? Thanks for this support.

The 777 or 755 permissions I was referring to are the permissions for the temporary directory that is created when downloading by the use of the redirect link (sorry incorrect term for this, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment and haven't gone to do the "homework" to use the proper term). Those permissions are not applicable to the file(s).

Suggest reviewing the after installation file securement instructions available in the documents for installing ZC and also available in the FAQ section of this site.

The reason I had also made the inquiry about file restoration is that those two files provide a level of security that would not exist if only the folder were recreated. Some (and considering those that might find this in the future) may think that all is necessary is to restore the folder and be done. :)
