After login the logout option should show at the top, though there is some sort of formatting issue that pushes it down to where the text is hard to read.

As to watching from the admin, there could still be a misconfiguration of the admin/includes/configure.php as perhaps you're not watching the actual backup but instead your live site or some mix of the two.

Sorry it took so long to get back, had some technical difficulties that prevented me from posting. Nothing related to the site, all on my end...
Well, I bailed to go play golf! Had to clear my head. While driving back, I go "is this browser dependent?". So I come home and use Chrome...lo and behold I can log in like normal. And even the Who's Online show Ms JJ Watt - had to make up a name and since he is not married, it is truly fictional :) - is indeed online with an active cart. I was originally use FF and I cleared FF cache as well. And FF still is not showing me logged in...

Oh, and it works in MS Edge as well...go figure.

So that does seem odd... There seems to be very little that would be browser dependent on "accepting" login credentials... The only thing that seems to come to mind is sessions/cookies... I mean at one point I was thinking that maybe need to validate the html, but don't see how that would affect the ongoings of the "I'm logged in now" process... The communication protocol doesn't seem to be an issue (https isn't used in the sample site), is there an issue with the same browser on your live site?

Come to think of it I did have an issue once with ff where I had created a sub-domain or two and I could log onto the primary site, but not the sub-domains... Chalked it up to being too "newly" created. After I had let sessions expire and not logged onto the first site, I was able to log onto the "alternate" site(s). Later created sub-domains using different site users (not ZC users, but associated with the hosting account) then was able to login to the different sites... Leads me back to some sort of php/session related path issue...

    Whatever, is odd...

well, I need to install and test Group Pricing by Item first and having a customer log in is VERY important to this test. Once that is done, I wlll start my preparations for 1.5.4

    Thanks!

(reply aimed at no one in particular)
Personally I wouldn't consider your experience here as particularly odd. Sessions can actually be quite tricky (and finicky) especially with multiple sites on the same server, and doubly so if the sites are in the subfolder of another site. If this alone wasn't bad enough, when cookies are added into the mix you also have local caching to really mess with your head (and the software).

Thankfully, when the "right" settings (for any given server/situation, and more often than not the defaults are fine) and any caches cleared, it is something that rarely needs further consideration.

Inexperienced zenners should not mess with the session settings because it is very easy to lock yourself out of your own store and the only way to recover is to revert the settings using phpmyadmin or some other SQL admin tool.

(Just a word of advice for the unwary)

    Cheers

Check that your FF isn't rejecting cookies.
Be wary of any toolbar add-ons that you have added.

Other than this there isn't much else it could be.
