> As for database constraints, there are ways that a backup of your database backup can be modified to use a different prefix including adding one if one was not used... This way two stores can operate off the same database at least for testing, and then only the needed operations reproduced on the "real" database.
Great idea. I have accidentally done that already while trying to setup 'localhost', and would work for the upgrade when I get around to it.
a) the site is not viewable on my host due to an unannounced PHP upgrade (PHP 5.5)
b) I want to view the installed template that includes a flyout menu, google froogle data (shipping weight/UPC/ASIN/etc) as well as test the cart as i uninstall modules.
c) last, the project has (unfortunately) turned into an obsession of a learning curve.
A) may I suggest that you subscribe to Zen Cart Release Announcements so that you are not surprised in the future about changes that are being made globally (retirement of sub-systems such as PHP 5.2.x). I did a relatively quick look through and didn't see that it was out-right stated that PHP 5.2.x was going away, but the latest ZC releases have been targeting upcoming application of newer PHP versions on various servers... This would/should lead one to question the upgrade path of ones host.
B) the default template hasn't exactly changed formatting, so if the same template formats are maintained with the applicable upgrades in other aspects of the template files, you could build your site using your "existing" template and never know the wiser that it was 1.3.8 before and 1.5.4/5 now...
C) always tends to go that way, but do try to remember your goal... Would think it is to make money off of the site that currently is not functional? Or is it? I lost track. :) and right now is "costing" money to operate but not make sales... Just sayin'... There's plenty to learn simply in the upgrade process, the operation under the new design, etc... But if you find that you need to continue, seems more information may be necessary to help. Ie. What are the differences in your current install as compared to a new install of the same version? What files are in one set that are not in the other? Don't discredit files that have been "renamed" as in some cases they can be a problem to loading the site...

So are you getting a blank page on your xamp install??a) the site is not viewable on my host due to an unannounced PHP upgrade (PHP 5.5)

This was an unannounced Host upgrade. A notice from Zen wouldn't have helped ( other than the need for an upgrade to a newer site).
Upgrade on current site. Got it, except the BIGGIE .... having to login to admin every 15 minutes. It's the most annoying feature of the new version.

Have not seen that in installations. I always rename files that will be overwritten by a add-on.

The past is the past, I agree. The intent/thought was maybe the host offered the ability to upgrade the php version before forcing the upgrade. A side note, have you contacted the host to find out why you weren't notified? (Ie, may have some incorrect contact info?)
As to the naming/renaming convention, do you leave .php at the end of the renamed file(s)? (Technically don't need to know to what, just whether do or not. There are some names that could cause a PCI scan verification failure, but that's a different topic also.)

Not going to play that game with a mirror backup on my 'puter and website. I'll just go GRRR every time I do, and blame the lawmakers/penthouses that know nothing about actual coding/admin of websites.
/rant to avoid getting into political discussions, but to be honest, PCI Compliance does have a political element .... another thread for another time .... :-(
