    Default Question about upgrading

    Hi There,
I'm new to this forum and so was wondered if anyone can help. I had a website put together in Zen cart around 2007 and have never updated it to the latest version. I'm quite happy as it is but my web host provider has said may be you should update the site to the latest version, which is asks to download. I'm worried as it might change the look of the site? As this would be a lot of work if it does. Or do I just leave it as it is.?

Have a look at the site at:
    yellowpumpkin.co.uk

    Can anyone advise?

    Many Thanks,
    Richard

Welcome to the Zen Cart forums! If you haven't been continually updating your site since 2007 (around the time that Zen Cart 1.3.8a was released), your site is living on "borrowed time" due to underlying changes made to PHP (the language on which Zen Cart is based) over the past 9 years.

You don't say what version of PHP is currently being run for your site, but anything over PHP 5.2 is going to wreck havoc (at a minimum) or cause your old-ZC-version site to error-out due to those PHP interface changes.

In the future, it's best to start a new question as a new post so that your question doesn't get lost in a thread's prior discussion.

With regards to the effect of upgrading on the look of your site, there are a few factors at play here. The upgrade of the ZC base software doesn't directly affect the look, but how the template is formatted and plugins that have been installed may not exist or they themselves may need modification. The process isn't terribly difficult, but it would be suggested to identify what it is you want to the site to be able to do, (most helpful if you can identify what you have previously installed/modified) so that the upgrade can go smoothly.
Something else to consider is that in that time, mobile devices have become more popular and accessing a site is frequently performed on such. There are now templates that handle such mobile devices as well as code that can be added to an existing template to make it mobile friendly.

As long as you plan on continuing to operate your store, you should continue to consider upgrading. A general overview of this process can be found at: http://www.zen-cart.com/entry.php?3-...d-of-upgrading
