Is it possible to customise the layout of the Admin Dashboard in 1.5.6 ? Some of the features are of no real use or interest to me.

If you mean the contents of the display-boxes on the admin home screen, yes, you can manually edit the generated HTML by editing the /admin/index_dashboard.php file.
If you mean the "menu options", you can create an additional Admin Profile which doesn't have access to the menu features you don't want to show, and then assign yourself to that profile instead of to SuperUser..
