Limit free product to one per customer

I have a zencart site at http://www.shirtsandladders.com and now I'm setting up a second site for a client of mine.

He wants to ship free samples to people who request them but he wants to limit one free sample of each product per customer.

Basically, if <username> has already received a free sampe of <product>, then either the free sample of <product> should disappear from the catalog when <username> is logged in OR, more simply, <username> should not be able to check out with the free sample of <product> in his cart.

Any ideas on how to do this within the given zencart structure. I feel like I'm pretty familiar with zencart but this is a new one.

I guess I'm cheap... I don't give things away for free on my site!

Oh, and I thought of doing it with a coupon that knocks the price down to zero that is only usable once per person, but my client would definitely pitch a fit at the extra step...

Did you ever get it figured out??? I am having about the same problem. I have feebies, but only want to give one per person but one person was just able to purchase 5 freebies at seperate orders.
They are downloadable products so she placed one order logged in again and placed another and so on.
Now I have the following settings:
Product Qty Minimum: 1
Product Qty Maximum: 1 0 = Unlimited, 1 = No Qty Boxes
Product Qty Units: 1

and it does show they can't add more than just one item to the cart, but I want it so that same customer can't download the same product again.
