Even it was not what you were asking for , it help me a lot the answer, in fact I was looking just to turn off the counter in the sidebox categories.

So IŽll repeat in case somebody is looking for the same answer.

Admin--->Configuration--->MyStore--->Show Category Counts--Here is where you turn it off /on.
