Coupon Exclusions

Is there a way to get a coupon to exclude certain categories of items? eg, have the coupon not apply to items that are on special, and/or are in a certain category.

Yes, you can exclude certain products or categories with the Coupon Admin. Create your coupon, save it then click Restrictions.

One other question about this. If I restrict a top level category, does it restrict all the subcategories as well or do I have to do each subcategory individually?

Also, is there a way to copy an existing coupon?

No, there is not a way to copy an existing coupon at the moment.

And yes, if you deny a coupon from a category, it is also denied for all children of that category as well.
