    Tax

How do you not charge tax to a customer that is non-taxable? Where the products are taxable to most customers and a few customers have a tax permits.

You configure your taxes to include only tax zones like for Florida so only Florida residents get taxed on taxed products but not folks in Ohio ...

EZorb is referring to customers with reseller's permits who may live in a taxable zone but are exempt from paying sales tax on certain purchases (items for resale).

There is a tax-exempt module that you can add on. It does work with 1.3.0.1, I'm using it now.

The order total is slightly buggy, however. There was a mathematical discussion about a workaround to correct the error, but I didn't quite follow it.

I'm not sure where contribution downloads are found now.

I am having the same dilemma. I can't even install the tax exempt module because it keeps telling me I don't have the right tables in my database when I go to do the SQL patches. After reading the earlier threads on the problems with this module, though, I don't think I want to install it after all.

I don't know how to fix the math problem, but I think I can explain it (IRL I'm a math teacher). The problem is that when you add 10% and subtract 10%, you don't end up with the original amount. The 10% you add is 10% of the original amount, but the 10% you subtract is not 10% of the original, it's 10% of the new total, so it's not equal to the amount that was added. An example would be if you invite 100 people to your party and you expect that 90% will show up, you're expecting 90 people. The caterer asks how many you expect and you say 90, so he buys food for 10% more people than you expect, which is 99 (90 plus 10% of 90 which is 9.) My understanding was that the tax exempt module was doing something similar. It was adding on the sales tax as a percentage, then subtracting off the same percentage.

I don't know how to code it, but the way to work around it is instead of subtracting off a percentage, divide by 1.xx where xx is the percentage that was added on. Example: $10.00 purchase with 6% tax added gives $10.60. $10.60 divided by 1.06 yields $10.00. (I entered this into Quickbooks as a price level so that I could charge whole dollar amounts at craft fairs and include sales tax in the price, and I also used it to make reverse sales tax tables so my fellow crafters could do the same.) It sometimes ends up a cent off because of rounding, but a cent is worth the convenience.
