Use CAD ...

Check your Currency settings ...

Did you change your language file? If so, then this too needs to be CAD if using it ...

OK. I changed the language setting Admin : Localization : Currencies to CAD.

Edited, override of english.php to set
define('LANGUAGE_CURRENCY', 'CAD');

Then, in Admin :
Configuration : My Store changed
Switch To Default Language Currency to True (I could not get it to work when it was false)
