Tax exempt contribution order total error

I'm using the Tax Exempt module from soapin_mama.

1) Even when a product type is non-taxable, tax exemption credit is applied anyway.

2) The order total calculation is wrong.

For instance, with a tax rate of 5%, one sees this:

Sub-Total:       $200.00
VA tax 5.0%:      $10.00
Tax Exempt:      -$10.00
Free Shipping:     $0.00
Total:           $199.50

I saw a discussion of the mathematics of the order total on the old message board, but can't find that discussion now.

Any ideas what changes need to be made to fix either of these errors, or if there is a newer version of the Tax Exempt module? The one I'm using is version 1.0 from Feb. 2005.
