this is soooooo frustrating!
having cured the intial problem.....and all working ok - I have just come back to it and now havea different set of error messages. no files have been chnaged - I left the house to go shopping so not sure why these new warnings are appearing!
this is the emssage I now get:

I am actually doing a clean install of zencart right now to start all over again. have been wrestling with this for so long I think it's just best to start at the beginning! I should point out I am actually a designer, not a programmer - but chose zencart as my e-commerce option as a previous store of mine was os comm and that was a nighmare to customise in many ways so thought this would be easier all round!
to have these many issues with just the installation and set-up process is certainly very frustrating but the forums seem very active and the FAQ section is very comprehensive so am sure I will gett here - is a mission of mine now!

Assume you're on a mac - the only free alternative AFAIK is called "FUGU" - you can get it from:
http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/
In case you want to rule out your FTP program....
