"zencart has bloated sql calls to the mysql server"

I was chatting with tech support at Chain Reaction Web today regarding the slowness of a ZenCart install, and they kept pushing me to convert to CRE Loaded. The tech support person gave me the following statements:

*Converting your cart to creloaded will help...zencart has bloated sql calls to the mysql server

*We have dropped support for zencart to all but existing customers because they haven't updated their code base

Can anyone speak to the validity of these statements? I'm disappointed that they are coming from a company whose front page states "Chain Reaction Web is #1 in osCommerce and Zen-Cart hosting".

At this time, yes, there are a lot of sql calls to the DB. BUT, the reason there are so many is all of the features that are available on the front page. A search of the FAQs and forum should net you some very good speed optimization suggestions.

Also The next major release will have dropped the queries by about 80% with the change to MPTT for the categories menu and many other query optimizations.

Thanks - I will check out the certified hosts section, and I was already planning to look through the optimization techniques.

In fact, I was asking them how much optimization techniques would help, and I think they misconstrued my questions as asking them to optimize it for me. Hence, the "we have dropped support for zencart" response.

Oooh, I am really looking forward to this! I've followed all the optimization paths, but am having customers complain about slowness on my small site. I understand that much of this is due to general dreamhost slowness, but hopefully this fix will address the problem.

I really don't want to have to move my store, forum, wiki and picture gallery over to a new host. Don't have the time.

Now when I plane to start new shop - I need to buy only recommendet hosting
It is no problem if i open international shop.. but if you open local shop it is problem.. better to have server installed in local barebone network than on external network... local traffic and international traffic have differen speed and different cost

In my case, I had to change hosts 3 times! There are scripts to let you rotate users (many hosts allow x amount of users with y amount of queries, so if you make 5 users with 50,000 queries per hour, and randomize them, you have 250,000 queries per hour, which should at least keep the small to medium store out of trouble).

BUT - the one single most important thing you can do (as per the tips page) is to turn off those cat counts, both in admin AND storefront. Do that, and the warning emails vanish and no need for the user rotation either!
