how to fill in the gap in my main page?

there is big gap between my "welcome note" and the "new products display table". how to fix it?

As you are setting this up and are not currently a live store, I recommend that you setup your own template based on the template_default file set.
You can search here for the many posts about this.

You are currently using the classic template and that uses a combination of the new stylesheet and the original style sheet and this will continue to give you problems as to which settings takes precedence.
