Upgrade problems/concerns

I am still using 1.2 for a client site. I want to upgrade to 1.3.1 for new features and ability to turn off some features. But I dont want to overwrite custom changes I have to the languages, modules, etc.

i.e. I made the cart look different, frotn page look different, footers, headers, etc, will all be overwritten.

Is there a list of files that need to be updated so i can pick and choose what to update, and not update the others?

Templates designed for ZenCart 1,2* do not work with latest zencart, without
modification as now CSS based/tableless.. HTH

well guess i cant upgrade because i cant change the look or anything. bah
