Default uses per customer vs. coupon?

Hey all- quick question here. In my coupon admin, when I'm creating a promo code for users to enter into our cart, there's two values: Uses per Customer, and Uses per Coupon. I understand what Uses per Customer is; obviously, it's how many times a user can use that code. But what does Uses per Coupon mean? Is that how many times the code can be entered total, regardless of the user entering it? I'm confused. TIA.

Kim, to clarify this, if I'm offering the coupon w/ sign up and I leave it blank, then it can be used time and again by anyone, but only once per customer, right?

Thanks, I'm really glad Inquarta posted the question. I had set it to 1 use 1 customer. Now it makes sense that my testers haven't input one.

Kim, I have these settings correct then, but for some reason customers are able to use the coupon multiple times. The way I have my site setup is if you place an order and came from "XYZ advertising site" then you'll receive a 5% discount on your first order. After the first order, the customer is placed into a discount group giving them the same 5% discount without having to enter the code. Some people have been able to use the coupon twice, once not in the discount group, then again in the group giving them a 10% discount!!!! Some of these items I get at 10% off so once they pay with paypal i'm losing 4%. Please help.
