Default Successful install on 1 & 1 Linux server!

    Well, so far anyways...

I work for a specialty pet shop and my boss decided to get hosted for a new online wholesale store. I've heard good things about the current host, so we went for it. Originally, I chose a Microsoft server before I learned about ZenCart. However, I looked at the specs and I noticed that the scripts required MySQL, so I had our account switched over to Linux... and then during installation of ZenCart, I noticed a warning about PHP scripts running with CGI. I thought all was lost. But, the installation still worked and I haven't noticed any problems as of yet. My question is am I going to be plagued with problems later on? I sure hope not, I really like it and I hope everything is going to be alright.

    Dogfusion,

being that 1 & 1 and Camelot Hosting are direct competition I wont give any comment.

all I will say is if you run a search on your hosting company you will find several items.

1and1 have a few problems with dynamic php based shpping carts.

    1. Their ssl set up is a little unusual and you may have to make a few edits to get their shared or full ssl to work with Zen Cart.

    2. Their support is reported to be pretty slow to respond.

    3. They offer massive amounts of bandwidth and webspace and can only do this by packing all servers to the gills. So there are lots of reports of slow page load times.

Thanks for the heads up, that's what I needed to know.

    >> I'm not promoting the said host in the least. I just thought that maybe I was lucky to have this awesome script work on their type of package and someone was going to tell me that I'm still doomed either way(which sort of happened anyways lol) That's all I had on my plate to eat... there was no MySQL in the MS package and the Linux shared PHP with CGI, I am just hoping to get a good run out of ZenCart until something would get nuked by the host.

In fact, I don't mind if this topic is deleted. Bare in mind that we already had the said host, even before discovering ZenCart. I was meaningfully probing for other people with the same host, in order to see how it went for them. If I would have found ZenCart first, then I would have made sure to get a compatible host...exclusively for Zen. But woe is me, as I bide my time, knowing my beloved Zen won't last on the evil host.

I'm obviously not a great fan of 1and1, but provided you come here for support on problems with your cart then you should be okay. It's just that you can't expect meaningful support on shopping cart issues from any company whose expertise is solely with providing hosting.

I like 1and1. There has really been only the SSL issue, right? We had a host go out of business which caused us a lot more headaches than modifying a couple lines of Zen code for SSL.

At least 1and1 is likely to be around a while. We have 9 domains on a shared account, but really only use one, so the overloading of servers is, in my opinion, and overrated issue. Slow support is also a minor issue the more you learn/know, plus there are zillions of 1and1 members out there who can lend a hand.

And, no, I don't get paid for saying this.

I dont think they were refering to just your 9 accounts causing an over load issue,
its the zillions of customers that is the issue,
that and the 2000+ accounts that get stuck on 1 server.

and Please dont always think that the big named guys are going to hang around for awhile,

    do a google for featureprice.com

that was a big name and they folded.

If you look at my post you'll see that I didn't actually slag off 1and1. The positive is the large amount of bandwidth you get and large amount of webspace. Many people go for this - not realising that they are higly unlikely to use more than a fraction of it.

The downside of that is that large hosts know that most people don't use their allowance and so "oversell" the amount of space actually available on a server and the amount of bandwidth they get allocated with each server. That's how you end up with so many sites packed onto each server.

As long as you don't mind slow support times and slow page delivery (a fact with 1and1) then you'll obviously be happy with what they provide. And they are streets ahead of Fasthosts (now owned by the same company as 1and1).

My two cents after just attempting to install and configure on a 1 and 1 site for a client. (who got smart in this process and is cancelling her account with them to move to a new host) ...

    # 1 I have spent 2 days not able to work on the site because SQL was unavailable.

    # 2 My Dog knows more than their canned response support team

    # 3 I have never seen such a stupid control panel

    # 4 Same with their SQL ( give me PHPMyAdmin ANY time )

    # 5 Page loads are indeed slow as hell compared to others

    # 6 I cannot believe people actually pay that much!

So there ya have it - my opinion of 1 and 1 after working zen sites for 2 years.
When the world gets in my face I say Have A Nice Day.
