Category off but Search by Man... brings it up

We turned off a category of odds and ends we need to access at will in the cart. These intems have a manufacturer listed and so, despite the fact that the category is off, they still come up in search reasults by Manufacturer.

Is there a place in the admin that address this? Thank you.

When you turned off the Category ... did you turn off the products too?
