Giving the default template a whole new look

Hi guys, I have just started using ZenCart and the journey until here was a rough one.

I looked through the layout of the cart, I wanted to change it according to the look I have in mind. I could have done the changes easily if the code was in simple HTML but this is in PHP. As I am VERY new in PHP, I tried to understand the code of the index.php to the best of my abilities and i failed miserably. And the truth is, the code used here is WAY different from what I have learned so far.

I want to clean up the layout a lot and I have no idea where to start. Can someone give me a walkthrough on how to removes specific parts in the layout and where to find the necessary files?
